Mr George A. Wauchope (Member) was killed in a road accident on 13th June, at the age of 61.
He was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Southampton, and later at Bannister Court School. Mr Wauchope served his apprenticeship from 1921-24 with Stothert and Pitt, Bath, and F. Smith and Sons Ltd of Southampton. During this period he attended University College, Southampton, where he obtained his diploma in electrical and mechanical engineering.
In 1922 he continued his apprenticeship with Gwynnes Engineering Co Ltd and, on its completion, was appointed a technical assistant in the contracts and sales department. He became Assistant Manager of the department in 1932. Four years later he was made a Director of Gwynnes Pumps Ltd.
In 1940 he became a Director of William Foster and Co. Ltd and was appointed Managing Director of Gwynnes Pumps Ltd in that year and of William Foster's in 1960. He was also a Director of Allen-Gwynnes S.A. (pty) Ltd.
Mr Wauchope became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1934 and a Member in 1945. He took a very active part in the affairs of the Institution and was a well-known figure at meetings where he had presented several papers. He was a member of the Hydraulics Group Committee, being Chairman from 1952-54, and he was also Chairman of the Committee of Management of the Benevolent Fund in 1961. He served on the Panel for Liaison with the British Standards Institution and, at the time of his death, was a member of the Institution's Planning Panel for the 10th Congress of the International Association for Hydraulic Research.
Among his other interests and appointments were membership of the Institution of Water Engineers, of the A.S.M.E., and of the British Hydromechanics Research Association, of which he was Vice-President. He was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Fluids Division of the National Engineering Laboratory and an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
Mr Wauchope was a much respected figure in Institution life, always courteous and friendly, his advice was highly valued by his numerous friends and colleagues.
