1840 Born at Hadleigh, Suffolk, the son of Cornelius Double and his wife Susan Spooner

1862 Married at Clapham, London, to Emma Sadler; he was a labourer; his father a fishmonger.

"Mr Double built Westminster Bridge and was an active man in raising Cleopatra's Needle.' Note: Westminster Bridge was opened in 1862 and Cleopatra's Needle erected in 1877.

1871 George Double 29, engine fitter, lived in Kendal, with Emma Double

• 1840 Born at 132 Benton Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk, the son of Cornelius Double and his wife Susan Spooner (from Somerton, Suffolk). Youngest of 7 siblings, Cornelius (1829), Walter (1833), maria (1821) Elizabeth (1823, married Laws) Emily (1826), Susannah (1836). Cornelius listed as agricultural worker.
• 1851 Census George Double listed as a ‘Scholar’ living in Benton Street, Hadleigh
• 1861 Census GD living in London in Newington, occupation ‘railway porter’.
• 1862 Married at Clapham to Emma Sadler, (born in Somerton Suffolk in 1840)
• 1862 'Mr Double built Westminster Bridge (mentioned in tender for Wormingford bridge in 1891)
• 1866 his sister Elizabeth Laws died, widow of Frederick Laws, Master Mariner, leaving 4 children.
• 1871 Census states George and Emma Double staying at Nab Cottage, Undermilbeck, Kendal, Westomorland, his occuaption ‘engine fitter. The Mortlake family also living there, Mr Mortlake ‘ferryman’.
