George Thomson (1815-1866) founder of J. and G. Thomson
1815 March 25th. Born the son of John Thomson at Partick, near Glasgow.
Apprenticed to Mr. Graham, millwright, Partick,
Entered the works of Robert Napier, engineer and shipbuilder, where he acquired a knowledge of marine and general engine work.
Appointed assistant manager under David Elder (the head manager, and father of the more widely-known John Elder of Fairfield yard).
1846 After occupying this position for several years he commenced business as an engineer at Clydebank Foundry, Glasgow, along with his elder brother James, under the firm of James & George Thomson.
1847 The brothers established a foundry in Anderston.
1851 The Thomsons added a shipbuilding branch at a yard at Govan.
1851 Living at 8 Royal Terrace, Glasgow (age 36 and born at Patrick, Lanarkshire), an Engineer. With wife Elizabeth (age 29) and children James Thomson (age 6), Jane Thomson (age 2), George Thomson (age 5 Months) and Elizabeth Thomson (age 5 Months) plus John Walker (age 20) and Andrew Walker (age 17) both nephews plus three servants. 1861 Living at 2 Newton Place, Glasgow (age 46 and born at Partick, Lanarkshire), an Engineer Iron Ship Builder. With wife Elizabeth (age 39) and children James Thomson (age 16), Jane Thomson (age 12), Elisabeth Thomson (age 10), George Thomson (age 10), Mary Thomson (age 8), Christina Thomson (age 6), Florence Thomson (age 4), Margaret Thomson (age 2), Robert Thomson (age 11 Months) plus one visitor and five servants. 1863 James Thomson retired; George took over the business.
1866 June 28th. Death at 2 Newton Place of George Thomson Esq. Engineer and Shipbuilder. [3]. The business was continued by his two sons.
1866 June 29th. Died and buried at Glasgow Southern Necropolis
1871 Elizabeth was living at 2 Newton Place, Glasgow, (age 49), an Annuitant. With her children George Thomson (age 20), Eliza Thomson (age 20), Mary Thomson (age 18), Florence Thomson (age 14), Margaret Thomson (age 12), Robert Thomson (age 10), plus five servants [4]
