The company was formed in March 1887 [2]

Acquired the rights to run a ferry across the Thames from Greenwich from the previous holder, Mr. Cross

Admiral Sir Edward Inglefield was chairman of the company.

1888 Launch of its first boat, Countess of Lathom, designed by Clark and Standfield, built by Steward and Latham. Appleby Brothers carried out the work onshore, pontoons, machinery, etc. The company intended ultimately to have as many as 3 steamers to ply between Greenwich and Millwall.
