Guiseppi Martinez

"We regret to record the death of Mr. Guiseppi Martinez which took place on June 9. Mr. Martinez was born in Naples in 1881. He joined the Naval Academy at Leghorn and after graduating, joined the Italian Fleet. He attained the rank of commander and qualified in electrical engineering. After the 1914-1918 war he left the Navy and joined Pirelli S.p.A. at Biccoca in Milan where he continued to study electrical engineering from a manufacturing and commercial point of view. In 1920 Mr. Martinez came to this country to take up the position of director and general manager of Pirelli General Cable Works Ltd., a position he retained until 1940. He was made a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1929. It was during his management of Pirelli General that the Eastleigh factory was built, and in 1928 production of paper insulated power and telephone cables formerly carried out at the Southampton factory, commenced. In 1939 he founded the Eastleigh Engineering Co for his sons. This company manufactures mainly wire-drawing machines. In 1946 the name was changed to Barron and Crowther Ltd. after the acquisition of this company in Preston."
