Major HENRY POWELL was born in Bristol in 1882 and educated at the Merchant Venturers' Technical College.

In 1901 he joined Messrs. Rose Brothers (Gainsborough) as a draughtsman.

On the formation of a subsidiary branch entitled The Northern Manufacturing Company to specialize in high-class machine-cut gearing, Major Powell was appointed chief engineer and designer.

He also lectured in mathematics at Gainsborough Science School.

After serving in France during the War, Major Powell took up an appointment in the Research Department at Woolwich Arsenal.

He died on 13th May 1928, and he had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1913.
