1953 Obituary [2]

HERBERT DOWELL received his education at the Municipal Technical School, Blackburn, where he also began, in 1896, a seven-year apprenticeship with Yates and Thom, Ltd. (now Foster, Yates and Thom), general engineers, in the employment of which he continued as assistant to the works manager until 1907.

He then went to Ireland to take up an appointment as chief engineer to the Bessbrook Spinning Company, Ltd., and after holding this position for fourteen years returned to Yates and Thom, Ltd., to act as sales representative.

In 1928 he took up a similar appointment with the Unit Superheater Company, Ltd., Swansea, but eight years later he renewed his association with Foster, Yates and Thom, Ltd., with which firm he remained until his death, which occurred on 4th March 1952 in his seventieth year. For a number of years he had held the position of works manager and in 1951 he joined the board of directors.

Mr. Dowell had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1911.
