"HUGH COLE, who was born in 1876, was educated at Rossall School and the Durham College of Science. He obtained his practical training with Messrs. J. F. Low and Company, Ltd., of Monifieth, Forfarshire, from 1894 to 1899, and during this period continued his education at the Dundee Technical Institute.
For the next five years he held short appointments, chiefly as an erector, with various firms including Messrs. Hick Hargreaves and Company, Ltd., of Bolton. He then went to India where he was employed as assistant engineer to the Gourepore Company of Calcutta. On his return to this country in 1911 he became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Nicoll and Son, engineers' merchants, of Dundee, and began a connection which lasted for nearly thirty years. During the war of 1914-18 he was attached to the Aeronautical Inspection Department as an inspector of metals. Mr. Cole, whose death occurred in March 1948, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1911."
