1864 Born in Bexley[1], first son of William Spottiswoode, one time president of the Royal Society, and Eliza Taylor Spottiswoode[2]

Educated at Eton and Oxford

1886 Elected a member of the Royal Institution[3]

1893 Married Miss Sylvia Tomlin at Westminster Abbey

1909 Hugh Spottiswoode attended the reception at which the Daily Mail's prize was presented to M. Bleriot[4]

1912 With Frank McClean, Hugh Spottiswoode was a pioneer of aerial photography of underwater objects; together they took photographs of the wreck of the Oceana at Eastbourne.

1912 W. Hugh Spottiswoode was elected a member of the Royal Aero Club[5]

1912 Hugh Spottiswoode presented 3 drawings to the Royal Aero Club dealing with the flight by F K McClean at Eastbourne and a photograph of the wreck of RMS Oceana[6]

1914 April: Hugh Spottiswoode was connected with The Sphere[7]
