Isaac Merritt Singer
1811 Isaac Merritt Singer born in New York.
1850 He adapted a sewing machine, manufactured by Orson C. Phelps of Boston to design of John A. Lerow, by altering the shuttle movement from circular to moving to-and-fro and using a straight needle. Singer also had the idea of using a treadle similar to that of a spinning wheel in place of a hand crank.
1851 Singer gained a patent and formed his own company; within two years it was the leading manufacturer and marketer of sewing machines in the USA.
1853 The company's name was changed to Singer Manufacturing Co. Offices and manufacturing were moved to New York City
1863 Birth of son Adam Mortimer Singer
1855 Singer was the world's largest sewing machine manufacturer.
1856 Branch office opened in Glasgow
1873 the Singer Manufacturing Company became a New Jersey Corporation under a special charter.
1875 I. M. Singer died in Torquay at age 63.
1905 Singer Manufacturing Co was incorporated as a private company in Britain
2001 Singer celebrated its 150th anniversary.
