J. Fenton, MSc, Member, was educated at Oundle School and Manchester University. After graduate training and drawing office experience at Vauxhall Motors Ltd, he was appointed chassis development engineer with ERA Ltd, at Dunstable, where he worked on the engineering of a mobile tyre test rig.
He later joined Unilever Ltd as senior assistant to the road transport technical adviser, and worked on special-purpose vehicle body design. He was sponsored by Unilever at the Advanced School of Automobile Engineering, Cranfield, and while there prepared a thesis on the design and analysis of a chassis-less box-van body to be built from sandwich panels for which his MSc was granted by the Cranfield Institute of Technology. His subsequent career has been in automotive engineering communication, commencing with technical and later full editorship of Automotive Design Engineering, then as Senior Lecturer in vehicle design at Hatfield Polytechnic where he was involved with the initial development of the new, industry-sponsored, vehicle engineering course.
He is now with British Leyland as Products Affairs Manager for the Truck and Bus Division in Lancashire.
