John Headon Stanbury (1835-1907) of the Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter and Half Moon Hotel, Exeter

1907 May 20th. Obituary and image. '...Mr. Stanbury died yesterday the age 72. He was native Barnstaple, and was apprenticed to Mr. Lilley, who then carried on a drapery business. Afterwards Mr. Stanbury became a commercial traveller; he was extremely successful, and was said to be earning the largest income of any commercial on the road. Later he devoted his attention the hotel business, acquiring the Star and Garter at Kew Bridge. He knew Exeter very well, and when the late Mr. Adam's, who carried on a drapery establishment almost opposite the Guildhall, died, Mr. Stanbury bought both business and the premises...When the Royal Clarence Hotel was in the market Mr. Stanbury acquired it, becoming the successor of the late Mr. Birkett. He followed Mr. Gardner as landlord of the Half Moon Hotel, Exeter, and also took the Grand Hotel at Plymouth, and for a time simultaneously ran the three houses.'[1]
