Originally built by Mackworth Praed, a Banker, and it's first landlord was Peter Berlon, a Frenchman, sponsored by the owner.

1766 A reference to the new rooms of Peter Berlon, a French school master.

1768 Berlon was advertising as 'Berlon's Coffee-house' and in November that year he announced that he had 'lately fitted lodgings, for the conveniency of those Gentlemen and Ladies who please to honour him with their Favours'

1771 '...house of Mr. Peter Berlon, known by the name of Berlon's New Coffee-house and Tavern, in the City of Exeter...'[1]

1775 Bankrupt. '...Commission of Bankrupt awarded and issued forth against Peter Berlon, of the City of Exeter, Vintner and Chapman...[2]

Taken over by Connor from the Saracen's Head, in London, but for only two years.

Taken on by Richard Lloyd of the Swan Inn, Exeter

1778 Became Thompson's Hotel after Thomas Thompson

1799 Taken over by John Phipps

1813 Taken over by Samuel Foote from Plymouth

Succeeded by Mr. Congdon

1826 Sarah Street formerly of the London Inn in Sidmouth, became the proprietor.

1827 July. Renamed as the Royal Clarence Hotel after a visit by Adelaide, Duchess of Clarence.

1841 Clarence Hotel, Exeter: Sarah Street, Innkeeper. With Charlotte Street, John Street, and Mary Love.[4]

1851 Royal Clarence Hotel. Innkeepers are Sarah Street (widow) and her sisters Mary Love and Elizabeth Tree. Seven visitors and six servants.[5]

1859 Proprietor is John Graham who takes over from Mrs. Street.[6]

1861 John Graham, Hotel Keeper. With his wife Mary. Six servants. Six lodgers.[7]

1866 Major sale of furniture and other items over seven days instructed by Mr. Graham.[8]

1871 Clarence Hotel. William Birkett in Hotel Keeper. With his wife and two sons. Twelve boarders and nine servants.[9]

1881 Clarence Hotel. Fourteen servants. Nine visitors. No owner listed.[10]

1891 Royal Clarence Hotel. 4 visitors; 4 boarders, 14 servants.[11]

1889 John Headon Stanbury.[12]

1907 Proprietor is J. Headon Stanbury who died 1907.[14]

1908 Proprietor is John Bailey Rowe Orchard the son-in-law of J. H. Stanbury.[15]

1924 Premises enlarged when it took over the Exeter Bank premises.[17]

1930-35 Proprietor is J. H. Stanbury and Co

2005 Branded as ABode Exeter and claimed to have 53 bedrooms.
