Mr J. E. Montgomery, BSc (Member), formerly Secretary of the Institution, died on 16th May at the age of 83. He joined the Institution staff in March 1920, being appointed Assistant Secretary (Technical) in September 1920.

On the retirement of the late General Mowat, he became Secretary of the Institution in March 1939 and relinquished the appointment in February 1942. For a further five years he continued his educational work for the Institution, finally retiring to Cornwall at the end of 1947, when the Council recorded their "great appreciation of his many years of service and in particular his contribution to the development of the educational policy and activities of the Institution".

He carried on his work for technical education by serving on the Cornwall Education Committee until his death.

He will be remembered for his dedication to furthering technical education and for his unfailing courtesy to all with whom he came into contact. His death will be mourned by his many friends.
