"JAMES EDWIN WYNESS, whose death occurred at Cape Town on 1st October 1950 at the early age of forty, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1941. He was educated at the Diocesan College, Dublin, the Coatbridge Technical College, and the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. His apprenticeship was served between 1923 and 1930 with Mr. P. Nugent, automobile engineer, and Messrs. Barclay Curle and Company, Ltd., Glasgow, marine engineers, with whom he remained as junior draughtsman for another year.
After five years' experience as engineer and draughtsman to Messrs. David Carlow and Sons, Ltd., Glasgow, printers' engineers, he went to South Africa where he found employment as engineer to Messrs. Hubert Davies and Company, Ltd., Port Elizabeth. In this capacity he was in charge of sales and also supervised the installation and maintenance of power engines and automatic machinery. From 1940 to 1943 he served as technical instructor in the South African Air Force with the rank of lieutenant. He then held various appointments, including that of shift engineer to the Tongaat Sugar Company, Ltd., South Africa. More recently he had been inspector of factories (engineering) in the Department of Labour at Cape Town."
