James Hunter (of Arbroath)

From Graces Guide

James Hunter (c.1806-1857) of J. and G. Hunter, inventor and patentee of stone-cutting machinery.

He was the father of George Hunter (of Arbroath).

In the early 1830s he started to develop a method of planing the stone from Leysmill Quarries in Arbroath. In 1835 the machine was perfected and patented in 1835, and called a 'Power Stone Planer'. It was first manufactured by the Munro Company, of Arbroath Foundry.

Other stone cutting machines were developed by James and George.

See here for I. G. Isherwood's excellent account of the life and work of James and George Hunter.[1]
