1809 With Nathaniel Edwards, and Richard Forester Forester, carried on the business that was then known as Oakes, Edwards, and Forester at Alfreton[1]

1814 Married Sarah Haden in Derby[2]

1816 Baptism of son James, in Alfreton; James senior was proprietor in the iron works at Summercoles; James's wife was Sarah[3]

1818 On the retirement of his partners, his business was renamed James Oakes and Co

1841 James Oakes 50, iron (proprietor?), lived in Alfreton with Sarah Oakes 50, Sarah Oakes 25, James Oakes 25, Thomas Oakes 20, Margaret Oakes 15[4]

1845 James Oakes died in Belper[5]
