JAMES SMITH was born in Glasgow on 9th July 1884, and was educated at Airdrie Academy.
In 1900 he began an apprenticeship of five years with the Airdrie Iron Co., Ltd., and on its completion he remained as a draughtsman with the firm.
In 1909 he became assistant manager of Weldless Chains, Ltd., Gartsherrie, and about a year later entered the drawing office of Messrs. Murray and Paterson, Ltd., Coatbridge.
His next appointment, in 1914, was to the Lanarkshire Steel Co., Motherwell, and in the following year he entered the service of Messrs. David Colville and Sons, Ltd., at their steel works in Cambuslang.
His death took place, after an operation, in Glasgow, on 12th April 1917, in his thirty-third year.
He was elected an Associate Member of this Institution in 1913; and he was also a Member of the West of Scotland Iron and Steel Institute.
