JOHN ANDERSON BAIN was born in Glasgow in 1876 and was educated at the Heriot-Watt College in Edinburgh and at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College.

He was apprenticed at Whitehall Foundry, Glasgow, and gained three years' subsequent experience with a firm of electrical engineers in the same city.

In 1896 he joined Messrs. McOnie, Harvey and Company as a draughtsman, afterwards going to India to superintend new works for the Burmah Oil Company at Rangoon.

In 1902 he became assistant manager in the engineering and ship-repairing works of the Penang Foundry Company, and carried out important works for the Federated Malay States Railway, and Penang Harbour Trust.

Returning to England, he was engaged first as consulting engineer and technical adviser to the Vacuum Oil Company, and later with Price's Patent Candle Company.

His death occurred suddenly on 8th June 1929.

He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1907.
