JOHN ARTHUR TOMLINSON joined the North Western Railway of India as assistant locomotive superintendent in 1911. He spent the greater part of his service as works manager of the Kanchrapara locomotive works of the Eastern Bengal Railway, and carried out reorganization of the works in connexion with the manufacture of a considerable output of shells during the War.

He was born in Trinidad in 1886 and graduated with the degree of B.Sc. at the University of Leeds in 1907.

He was apprenticed for three years with the Hunslet Engine Company and spent a further few months as a fitter at the Great Western Railway locomotive works before going to India.

In recent years Mr. Tomlinson was transferred to the Indian Railway Board for special duty in connexion with automatic central couples and other matters.

He died on 14th May 1928.

He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1913.
