John Carline (1758-1834)

John Carline (1758-1834) was an architect and stonemason

Born son of John Carline and his wife Ann Hayward.

1769 His father was foreman mason on the rebuilding of the English Bridge at Shrewsbury

He was trained as a stonemason by his father, but showed greater skill in terms of sculpture. He moved with his father to Shrewsbury in 1765. Around 1788 he appears to have set up on his own, specialising in churches and church memorials.

1780 Followed his father from Lincoln to Shrewsbury and took over the stone yard

With John Tilley successfully tendered for Thomas Telford's first bridge in Shropshire, the Montford Bridge.

1792 Tilley and Carline won the contract to replace the old Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury and continued as architects

1792 Birth of son John III

1795 Tilley died in December

1801-3 In partnership with Tilley's stepson, Henry Linnell

Later formed a partnership with one of his sons, John III, as J. and J. Carline

1811 Provided the temporary wooden bridge during the replacement of the Meole Brace Bridge outside Shrewsbury.

1834 Died
