"JOHN COOK was chief mechanical engineer of the Entre Rios and North Eastern Railways at the time of his death, which occurred on 3rd June 1949. He was born in 1894 and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Allan Glen's School, Glasgow, receiving his technical training at the Royal Technical College in that city. In 1910 he began an apprenticeship at the St. Rollux works of the Caledonian Railway, but four years later he volunteered for service in the Royal Naval Division, transferring subsequently to the submarine service of the Royal Navy. On demobilization in 1919 he returned to Glasgow to complete his apprenticeship and continue his technical training. In 1920 he obtained an appointment with Cardoba Central Railway, Argentina, as running shed foreman and in the following year was promoted to be divisional locomotive superintendent. After holding this position for eleven years he was made outdoor assistant to the chief mechanical engineer, and in 1937 he became assistant chief mechanical engineer. He transferred to the Entre Rios and Argentine North Eastern Railways in 1939 and held the post of acting chief mechanical engineer until July 1947, when he was confirmed in his final appointment. Mr. Cook was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1939, and transferred to Membership in 1948."
