JOHN ERNEST HOLDSWORTH CRAVEN was born at 'Bradford on 8th March 1878.
He was educated at the Belle Vue School and the Bradford Technical College, and on leaving the latter place he was engaged as draughtsman with Messrs. Ruston, Proctor and Co., Lincoln, with whom he remained nine years.
In March 1904 he became chief draughtsman for Messrs. Easton and Bessemer, Ltd., engineers, Taunton, and six years later joined the firm of Rudman, Lancey and Craven, Ltd., of Taunton, as partner, subsequently becoming managing director.
He brought out several inventions, one of these being a shaft inertia governor for positive drop valve-gears. Latterly he devoted his attention to moulding machines, which became one of the specialities of his firm, and during the War his firm has been engaged on the production of howitzer bomb stems, for the manufacture of which he designed special machines.
The strain of the work affected his health, and his death took place unexpectedly on 29th September 1917, in his fortieth year.
He was elected an Associate Member of this Institution in 1905.
