1881 Living at Maiden Erlegh House, Sonning, Berks: John Hargreaves (age 41 born Accrington), JP Counties Lancaster & Berks. Cotton Spinner Employing 460 Hands. With his wife Mary J. Hargreaves (age 42 born Abbeville, France) and their seven children; Amy J. Hargreaves (age 18 born Accrington); Mary Hargreaves (age 13 born Accrington); Laura Hargreaves (age 12 born Early, Berks); Alexander Hargreaves (age 10 born Yorkshire); Frank Hargreaves (age 7 born Yorkshire); Violet Hargreaves (age 3 born Early, Berks); and Guy Hargreaves (age one month born Early, Berks). One visitor. One Boarder. Ten servants.[1]

1893 October 3rd. Died. 'Colonel John Hargreaves, J.P., D.L., of Whalley Abbey, and Broad Oak, Accrington, died on Thursday morning, at his Scotch seat, near Kingussie, of congestion of the lungs. Mr. Hargreaves was head of the firm of John Hargreaves and Co., cotton spinners and manufacturers, Accrington, and was an extensive landowner at Accrington, Whalley, Kingussie, and Maiden Erlegh. He was master of a hunt in Oxfordshire, and was well-known all over the country.'[2]
