"JOHN HENRY ARTON, whose death in his seventieth year occurred on 26th January 1947, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1930.
He received his education at Liverpool University and at the Municipal Technical School in that city. On the completion of a five years' apprenticeship with Messrs. John H. Wilson and Company, Ltd., of Liverpool, in 1901, he continued with the firm for a further three years as fitter, erector, and foreman fitter.
In 1905 he became works manager and subsequently chief designer to Messrs. Thomas Bradford and Company, Ltd., of Manchester.
During the war of 1914-18 he was responsible for the British Army laundry at Staples and the production of shells and bombs. He then filled positions as works manager, engineer and manager, and works superintendent to various engineering firms in the north of England, including Messrs. Karrier Motors, Ltd., of Huddersfield, until 1934, when he received his appointment as divisional works manager to the Lockhead Brake Company, Ltd., of Leamington Spa. He was latterly Technical Adviser to the Director of the Company."
