"JOHN LIONEL CRIDLAN, whose death in his seventy-second year occurred on 28th June 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1908. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He received his technical education at Yorkshire College and obtained his practical training in the shops of the Farnley Iron Co, Leeds, during 1897 and 1898. After his return from Germany, where he gained experience of the working of brick and cement machinery with Moller and Pfeifer, Berlin, he became an assistant in the works of W. J. Jenkins and Company, Ltd., Retford, gas and ventilating engineers, and was placed in charge of the fan and air-compressor department.
From 1903 to 1905 he was with Heenan and Froude, Ltd., Worcester, where he was in control of a similar department with responsibility for design, manufacture, sales, and installation. He then acted as secretary for his father and took little part in active engineering for the rest of his life, apart from occasional work on the installation of refrigeration and electric lighting for firms in which he was personally interested."
