1884 'DEATH OF LIVERPOOL MERCHANT. Our obituary column records the death of one of the oldest Liverpool merchants, John Philips Mather yesterday in a ripe old age at his residence, Markfield, Bootle, He was in the 88th year of his age and the 64th of his wedded life. ..... He was formerly a partner in the firm of Mather, Dixon and Co., but subsequently carried on business for many years as an iron merchant in partnership with Mr. Septimus Ledward under the firm of Mather, Ledward and Co. ....'[2]
