"Major JOHN WILLIAM BRAND, R.E.M.E., was born in 1895 and served his apprenticeship with the Shields Engineering and Dry Dock Company, Ltd., from 1911 to 1914. He then joined H.M. Forces and served in the Royal Engineers for five years. In 1920 he went to sea and was employed as fourth and, later, as third engineer in full charge of watch. During this period he obtained his Board of Trade First-Class Engineer's Certificate. Subsequently he was engaged as assistant supervisor during the construction of the hull and machinery of the cable ship Dominia and, later, sailed in her as second engineer with the charge of the electrical plant. From 1933 to 1939 he was chief engineer of the motor yacht Rosaura, but in the latter year he obtained a commission in the R.A.O.C., and two years later was promoted to the rank of captain, obtaining his majority on his transference to the R.E.M.E. in 1942. Major Brand, whose death occurred on 12th March 1945, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1935."
