Professor Pope's primary education was received at the School of Arts and Crafts, Cambridge. He was apprenticed in 1930 at Boulton and Paul, Ltd., Norwich, and obtained a Whitworth Scholarship in 1935. He went to King's College, London, and obtained the degree of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Lond.) in 1939. He was awarded the Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees of Queen's University, Belfast, in 1943 and 1948 respectively, and was appointed lecturer in mechanical engineering, College of Technology, Belfast, 1938; assistant lecturer in engineering, University of Manchester, 1944; lecturer, later senior lecturer, in mechanical engineering, University of Sheffield, 1945; and Professor of Engineering and head of the departments of mechanical and civil engineering at the University of Nottingham in 1949.
He is a member of the Regional Advisory Council for the Organization of Further Education in the East Midlands, the National Advisory Council on Education for Industry and Commerce, and the Secondary School Examinations Council. Professor Pope is a member of the committee of the Education Group of the Institution.
