Established in 1709. Is one of the oldest commercial houses in London. Was conducted in latter part of eighteenth century under style of Smith, Kemble & Travers, and the senior partner at that time (William Smith) was M.P. for Norwich. In 1777 style of the firm became Smith, Kemble, Travers & Kemble; in 1807, Smith,Travers, Son & Kemble; in 1814, J. Travers & Son; in 1819, J. Travers & Sons. Incorporated in 1889.
1914 Present Directors: Sir Edward Bowron (Chairman), Ashwell Henry Stableforth (Deputy Chairman), Walter Francis Travers, Edward Reader Wilkinson, Charles David Mackenzie, and Richard John Harford. Premises: Comprise a large building at 119, Cannon Street, and 14, Sherborne Lane, E.C., and a Green Fruit Saleroom at Monument House, Monument Yard, E.C. Also large warehouses at St. Katharine Dock, E., for Tea Blending and Export Trade, General Stores, &c., and vaults for the firm's large Wine and Spirit trade; Spice mills at Travers Wharf, 54, Bankside. Branch Houses: 44, Stanley Street, and Pall Mall, Liverpool, and at Singapore. Specialities: Teas. Coffees, Sugars, Pure Spices, Canned Goods, Dried, Green and Fancy Fruits and Groceries in general, Wines and Spirits.
1963 Consolidated as a subsidiary of S. and W. Berisford.[1]
