1861 Living at 11 Melbourne Terrace, Salford: John Shaw (age 53 born Yorkshire), Engineer employing 10 men and 8 boys. With his wife Ellen Shaw (age 54 born Liverpool) and their four children; Joshua Shaw (age 20 born Salford), Engineer; Joseph Shaw (age 18 born Salford), Engineer; Ellen Shaw (age 14 born Salford) and John Shaw (age 10 born Salford).[1]

1871 Listed at Salford as Manger of Engineering Works.[2]

1874 Patent to Joshua Shaw and John Shaw, junior, of Wellington-street Works, Salford, in the county of Lancaster, Hydraulic Engineers, for the invention of "improvements in hydraulic hoisting apparatus."[3]

With his wife Elizabeth Shaw (age 38 born Salford) and their six children; Helen Fitzgerald Shaw (age 10 born Salford); Peter Shaw (age 8 born Salford); Elizabeth Shaw (age 6 born Salford); John Shaw (age 4 born Salford); Percy Shaw (age 2 born Salford); and Effie Shaw (age 1 born Salford). Two servants.[4]

With his wife Elizabeth Shaw (age 58 born Salford) and their four children; Helen Fitzgerald Shaw (age 30 born Salford); Peter Shaw (age 28 born Salford), Manager of Engineering Works; Elizabeth Shaw (age 26 born Salford); and Effie Shaw (age 21 born Salford). Three servants.[5]

1913 July. Died.

1913 Estate. 'Mr. Joshua Shaw, of Drywood, Greenleachline, Worsley, near Manchester, J.P., for Salford, of Messrs. John Shaw and Sons (Salford) Ltd., steam and hydraulic engineers, left £25.278.'[6]
