Manchester Corporation Electricity Department

From Graces Guide

1894 Description and illustrations of the Electric Lighting Works. This was evidently the Dickinson Street Power Station. 'The boilers are of Lancashire type, 30 ft. long and 8 ft. in diameter ; at present they are six in number, and a seventh is now being added. They work at a pressure of 125 lb. per square inch, .... There are connected to the mains 18,600 incandescent lamps of 16 candle-power, 250 arc lamps, and motors to the extent of 16 horse-power. This is an encouraging result when it is remembered that a preliminary supply on the two-wire system was begun only just a year ago.' The drawing show six 'Galloways' inverted vertical engines, with provision for four more, driving dynamos by Mather and Platt and the Electric Construction Co, and six smaller Hornsby engines driving ECC dynamos.[1]
