1954 Obituary
The death occurred at his home at Sanderstead. Surrey, on Thursday of Mr. Maurice Albion Ockenden (80). Chairman of Messrs. Duke and Ockenden, Ltd. the well-known firm of water engineers. Mr. Ockenden had been with the firm for many years, and had lived for 40 years at Sanderstead.
The business was founded by his grandfather, Mr. Albion Ockenden, who took into partnership his son. Mr. Albion Ockenden, Junior, Mr. M. A. Ockendens father, and Mr. Reginald Francis Duke.
Mr. Ockenden went to the United States in his youth. and returning to this country, was for a time manager of the well-known American firm of the Oil Wells Supply Co. whose interests he looked after in Europe as far as Rumania.
He assisted in the hydrological and geological sides of Messrs. Duke and Ockenden's business. He was a member of Institute of Structural Engineers and of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of the Geological Society. a member of the Worshipful Company of Tanners, and of the London Chamber of Commerce. on whose Council he served. and a Freemason.
The last of the Ockendens to be actively connected with the business (there has been no Duke for many years), Mr. Ockenden took a great Interest in the staff employed by the firm, a number of whom have long and honourable records of service. and he used to enjoy attending social gatherings arranged by the staff. He was a cousin of Mr. H. Ockenden the well-known Littlehampton ironmonger.
A widow and three daughters are left. The funeral was at Sanderstead on Monday. A sister, Miss E. M. Ockenden, lives in St. Mary's Close, Littlehampton.
