Montague Stevenson

Montague Stevenson (1843-1879) of Sheffield.

Born 1843 in Sheffield, son of Joseph Stevenson and Eliza née Jessop. Joseph was a horn and tortoiseshell comb manufacturer of J & J Stevenson. Eliza was daughter of William Jessop, founder of William Jessop and Sons, steel makers.

1861 Census – Steel Manufacturer. We will see later that he worked for William Jessop and Sons.

1866 Married Clara Roberts. Shown as a steel manufacturer.[1]

1871 Census – Steel Manager.

1875 Appointed to the Board and as joint managing director of newly incorporated William Jessop and Sons Limited. Notices state that Montague Stevenson was works manager of the predecessor private partnership and that, he and his co-managing director, former financial manager Joseph Burdekin, were to provide a substantial proportion of the capital. [2]

1879 Died 1 Sep 1879 at his residence, Fern Bank, Glossop road, Sheffield, aged 36.[3]
