Opened in 1844 with locomotives supplied by the Great North of England Railway

In 1844 it bought the Durham Junction Railway

In 1845 it bought the Brandling Junction Railway

1846 Bought the Durham and Sunderland Railway,the Pontop and South Shields Railway and the Great North of England Railway

On 3rd August 1846 it changed its name to the York and Newcastle Railway
