Newcastle and Gateshead Waterworks

1845 Company formed, later named the Whittle Dean Water Company, to divert two of the tributary brooks which flowed into Whittle Burn and to form large impounding reservoirs. The earlier water company transferred its works by agreement to the new company. An Act was obtained.

1848 The works were brought into operation, consisting of five reservoirs in the valley of the Whittle Burn, and having a capacity of 215 million gallons, the drainage area being about 3,600 acres.

1863 Company incorporated

1989 Lyonnaise des Eaux acquired the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Co.
