Norman Balmforth (Fellow) of Dartford, died on Dec 13 (1971). Born in 1914, much of his early career was spent with David Brown where he remained until 1951 as an Industrial Engineer.

In 1952, he joined Vacuum Oil Co (later to become Mobil) as Head Office Engineer, eventually reaching his final position in 1970 as Chief Engineer Divisions.

He was a founder member and subsequently Chairman of the Tribology Group Committee, he was also a past Chairman of the Lubricating and Wear Group. Mr Balmforth will be widely missed. He did a great deal of valuable work for the Institution which will be remembered for many years.
