Norton Folgate Generating Station

From Graces Guide
2024. The former engine and accumulator room of the power station, now 'The Light Bar'

The Great Eastern Railway constructed an electric generating station fronting onto Shoreditch High Street at Norton Folgate to provide power for lighting Liverpool Street Railway Station and hotel and associated buildings. R. E. B. Crompton was appointed electrical contractor. Paxman supplied five "Windsor" steam engines and three "Economic" boilers to drive the Crompton dynamos. The station came into service in 1893. A further boiler and two 200 IHP Windsor engines were ordered in 1894. Another "Economic" boiler was ordered in 1900.[1]

Power was also supplied to Moorgate Goods Station and to Broad Street Railway Station.

See here for a good source of information on the history of the power station and Broad Street Railway Station. A link (here) is provided to an illustrated article in The Electrical Engineer, 26 Jan 1894. Drawings shows eight engines, four of 200 and four of 100 IHP. Above the engine room was the accumulator room. The chimney was 150 ft high.
