Old Church Street Bridge, Newton Heath
The present bridge over the Rochdale Canal is of no particular interest, but the previous iron bridge, built in 1879, was of unusual form. See 1972 photo here, here and here[1]. The last photo shows that the parapets were cast by Woolstenhulme's, Rye & Co Ltd, Oldham, in 1879.
This 1972 photo shows part of the bridge with shallow cast iron beams, as distinct from deep plate girder beams on the other side.
The location of the bridge can be seen on the 1888-93 25" O.S. map here[2]. The area had been spared the heaviest onslaughts of industrial advance. The Monsall Dye Works was nearby, complete with bowling green, while a short distance to the east were Dob Lane End Mill, Barratt's Mills, Orleans Mill, Meadow Mills, Dob Meadow Mill, Britannia Mills, Ridgefield Mill, German Mill, and Failswoth Tannery. To the west were a tannery, rope works and Livingstone Mills.
See here and here for 1961 photos of the superficially similar Varley Street Bridge, Newton Heath and here, here and here for 1972 photos.
