Varley Street Bridge, Newton Heath

From Graces Guide

The present bridge is visually uninteresting, in contrast to its iron predecessor.

See here and here for 1961 photos of the Varley Street Bridge, and here, here and here for 1972 photos.

Tenders for the iron bridge were invited in 1883 [1]. Its unusual appearance was superficially similar the Old Church Street Bridge, Newton Heath, built in 1879, but aspects of the design are very different. For example, the Old Church Street Bridge has cast iron parapets, whereas the Varley Street Bridge has riveted wrought iron or steel plates.
