"PERCIVAL CHARLES GOODMAN, whose untimely death occurred on 20th September 1949 at the early age of thirty-eight, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1936, and transferred to Associate Membership three years later. He had been associated with Messrs. Chance Brothers and Company, Ltd., Smethwick, throughout his professional career, including his apprenticeship from 1926 to 1929. He was educated at the Smethwick Municipal Technical College, and at Sheffield University, where he obtained an Associateship. After further training in the drawing office of the engineering department he became assistant to the production and efficiency consultant, with whom he co-operated later in the formation of a planning department in the glass works and the training of the personnel. He also initiated an experimental engineering department and supervised the arrangement of the various processes for the production of glass, as well as the development of the essential machinery. He was confirmed in the appointment of planning and experimental engineer in 1938. Mr. Goodman was responsible for the development of a new technique in connection with the manufacture of hollow glass vessels, resulting in an improved and strengthened finish with considerable economy in cost."
