His education was acquired at the Hanley Municipal School and at the High School, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

He served his apprenticeship during the years 1897-99 with Messrs. W. Boultons Ltd., Engineers, Burslem, Staffs, and a further two years 1899-1901 in the shops and power-station of the Potteries Electric Traction Co., Ltd.

On completing his term he remained for about twelve years with the latter Company in various engineering capacities and finally as assistant engineer to the general manager.

In 1914, he left this country to take up a position with the Singapore Electric Tramways, Ltd., being responsible for the maintenance and reconstruction of permanent way and overhead work.

The business connection, however, was brought to an untimely close by his death in a motor accident on 24th May 1926.
