Apprenticed to be an engineer in Glasgow[1]

Made a partner by his father

1830 With his brother James took on his father's business when he retired.

1851 Peter Coats 42, J P, Thread Manufacturer, of The Firm Of 3, Employed 166 Men, ... Women, 26 Boys And 191 Girls, lived in Paisley, with Gloranna Coats 37, James Coats 16, Margaret Coats 15, Archibald Coats 11, Peter Coats 9, Mary Coats 7, Daniel Coats 6, George Coats 4, Gloranna Coats 2[2]

With his brother Thomas, Peter developed the Ferguslie Thread Works into one of the largest in the world

1856 THE Nitshill COAL COMPANY, and GEORGE COATS, Coalmaster at Nitshill, PETER COATS, Thread Manufacturer in Paisley, and THOMAS COATS, Thread Manufacturer there, the Individual Partners of that Concern, have applied to the Commissary of Lanarkshire, at Glasgow, to be decerned Executors-Creditors to the Deceased GEORGE MURRAY, Lime Merchant, 38, Kirk Street, Gorbals, Glasgow[3]

1861 THE Subscribers, the Trustee and Executors acting under the Trust-Disposition and Settlement of the deceased George Coats, Coalmaster at Nitshill, sometime residing at Crossmiln, thereafter in Glasgow, hereby intimate that on the 31st day of January 1860 they ceased to have any interest as Partners in the Business carried on at Nitshill, (Renfrewshire,) under the Firm of THE NITSHILL COAL COMPANY.
