Apprenticed to be an engineer in Johnstone[1]

c.1835 Taken into partnership by his father.

With his brother Peter, developed the Ferguslie Thread Works into one of the largest in the world

1851 Cotton Thread Manufacturer, lived at Ferguslie House with his family[2]

1856 THE Nitshill COAL COMPANY, and GEORGE COATS, Coalmaster at Nitshill, PETER COATS, Thread Manufacturer in Paisley, and THOMAS COATS, Thread Manufacturer there, the Individual Partners of that Concern, have applied to the Commissary of Lanarkshire, at Glasgow, to be decerned Executors-Creditors to the Deceased GEORGE MURRAY, Lime Merchant, 38, Kirk Street, Gorbals, Glasgow[3]
