"PHILIP GUISE WESTMACOTT was educated at Newcastle Grammar School and at Aldenham School, Hertfordshire. After two years' instruction in technical knowledge at Armstrong College he served a five years' apprenticeship, ending in 1911, with Messrs. Ernest Scott and Mountain, Ltd., electrical engineers, and during part of this period acted as confidential clerk to the managing director. He then proceeded to India, where he had secured an appointment as superintending and consulting engineer to Messrs. Ralli Brothers, merchants, with whom he remained for ten years.
From 1921 to 1932 he acted in a similar capacity, with a seat on the Board, for Messrs. R. Sim and Company, Ltd., jute merchants, of Calcutta. Since 1935 he had been a director and chairman of the Grantham, Melton Mowbray, and Uppingham Journal Company, Ltd., in which position he took an active interest in the mechanical side of the printing. Mr. Westmacott, whose death occurred on 19th May 1946, at the age of fifty-nine, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1912. During the war of 1914-18 he obtained a commission in the R.A.O.C. and served as an inspector of ordinance machinery. More recently he was on the strength of the India Reserve of Officers, retiring with the rank of captain in 1932. During the 1939-45 war he served as liaison officer and director in A.R.P."
