River Meadow Mill, Stalybridge

From Graces Guide

of Stalybridge

The 1850/2 O.S. map here shows a group of mills and and houses in what was largely an undeveloped area. River Meadow Mills comprised two large L-shaped blocks, one of which had an attached engine house, and a separate boiler house. There was an entrance at the northern end, from what is now called Printworks Lane, while at the south was another entrance, accessed by a bridge which crossed the River Tame to join a lane (now called Northend Road). Northend Mill was on one side of the lane, and a group of terraced houses on the other side. The lane led south westwards, and a branch headed north westwards, crossing the River Tame to a house called Acres Bank, in extensive gardens. This was occupied by mill owner James Adshead at the time To the east side of Northend Mill was the Huddersfield Canal. Little had changed by 1933 - see O.S. map here. By 1964 the Northend Mill and houses Acres Bank House had been demolished. See 1964 map here. The sites are now occupied by various industrial premises. See Google Maps image. Hartshead Power Station? was immediately north west of River Meadow Mill.
