ROBERT BATTISCOMBE ASKQUITH ELLIS was Honorary Secretary of the Midland Branch of the Institution during 1923-1924, and was closely associated with the James Watt Centenary Fund, for which he also acted as honorary secretary.

For eighteen years he was with the Wolseley Tool and Motor Company of Birmingham, first as chief assistant in the design department and later as manager.

He had received his technical education at Regent Street Polytechnic, and subsequently gained practical experience with Messrs. Elliott Brothers of Lewisham, Messrs. Rapier and Son of Acton, and the Maudslay Motor Company of Coventry.

At the time of his death Mr. Askquith Ellis was at work on a novel method of gearing automobiles which he was confident had high commercial value.

He was interested in astronomy and Egyptology, and was also a keen volunteer and later a territorial.

Mr. Askquith Ellis was born in London in 1878 and his death occurred on 7th May 1930.

He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1912.
