Robert Carnegie (1827-1911) of Carnegie and Matthew
1911 Died. 'One of Peterhead's oldest and most respected residents, in the person Mr Robert Carnegie, retired shipbuilder, Auburn Cottage, Prince Street, passed away yesterday morning the age 84. Mr Carnegie was born in 1827, and served his as a ship carpenter in the yard of Mr Francis Robertson, Peterhead. When his time expired he joined the London trading company Anderson, and Company, and voyaged for years to the Far East. In 1858 Mr Carnegie entered into partnership with Mr Thomas Matthew, shipbuilder, Peterhead, the firm subsequently becoming known as Carnegie and Matthew. On the death of his partner, about 20 years ago, Mr Carnegie was left with sole control of the business, carried until about five years ago, when he retired in favour of his eldest son, Alexander. At the time when Peterhead carried an extensive southern trade the yard of Messrs Carnegie and Matthew was justly noted for the seaworthy qualities of the craft turned out, the firm excelling in the building of clipper schooners. Mr Carnegie was predeceased by his wife about nine years ago, and is survived by a grown-up family of four sons and one daughter.'[1]
