1860-63 Served his time under Robert Morgan M I C E, constructing the Batley, Dewsbury and Heckmondwike waterworks.

1863-6 Resident engineer on the No.2 District of Royal Sardinian Railway under Benjamin Piercy M I C E and further work under him.

1866-73 Working for the Midland Railway Co, under J. S. Crossley, including 5 years on the Settle to Carlisle extension.

1873 Worked for J. Fraser and Clayton on the Great Northern and London and North Western Leicestershire lines.

1876 Associate of Inst Civil Engineers, of 13 Park Square, Leeds
