ROBERT RAMSBOTTOM LISTER was connected for many years of his long career with Messrs. Beyer, Peacock and Company, Ltd., Gorton Foundry, Manchester. He was born at Keighley in 1853 and in 1869 entered Messrs. Beyer, Peacock's works, where he served his apprenticeship during which time he was chiefly at work on locomotives for service on the Continent.
In 1873 he entered the drawing office, where he completed his apprenticeship two years later. He was retained as a draughtsman until 1880. He was made machine shop foreman in 1882, but after five years he joined the Broughton Copper Company as works manager. In 1890, however, he returned to Gorton Foundry as chief draughtsman. On the reconstitution of the firm he was made works manager, and held this position until his retirement in 1904. Mr. Lister built the Greenbank Laundry, Gatley, Manchester, a year later, and carried on the firm's business for the remainder of his life. His death occurred on 16th November 1938, in his eighty-fifth year.
